Parts
Materials: Both Door Fronts and the Magnet are metal – the other parts are plastic.
Build
Left-Hand Side Storage Compartment
Step 1
Fit the Magnet between these raised ridges on the inside of the Shelf Bottom (marked 3-1).
This Magnet is used in conjunction with the door magnets to hold the doors in the closed position:
Test fit the Shelf Top (marked 3-3) to the Shelf Bottom, then apply some super glue to the two pins of the Shelf Top:
Firmly press the two pins of the Shelf Top into the matching posts of the Shelf Bottom and allow the glue to set:
Step 2
The Left-Hand Door Front and Left-Hand Door Back are both marked ‘L3-1’. Test fit the two parts together, noting the two different sizes pins on the Left-Hand Door Front and matching round recesses on the Left-Hand Door Back. Then, apply a small drop of super glue into each of the round recesses of the Left-Hand Door Back:
Firmly press the Door Front and Door Back together, and allow the glue to set.
Make sure the free ‘flap’ of the metal hinge is not caught between these parts:
Step 3
The Right-Hand Door Front and Right-Hand Door Back are both marked ‘L3-2’. In the same way as before, test fit these two parts together, noting the two different sizes pins again. Then, apply a small drop of super glue into each of the round recesses of the Right-Hand Door Back:
Firmly press the Door Front and Door Back together, and allow the glue to set.
As before, make sure the free ‘flap’ of the metal hinge is not caught between these parts:
I have been mentioning the level of detail on this model a lot – check out the little ‘Air Chisel’ placard on this door:
Step 4
With the two holes on the Shelf Top facing up (circled below), slide the Shelf assembly onto the ‘rails’ inside the Compartment Inner, as shown. Do not use glue here as this shelf is designed to be slid in and out to access rescue equipment as needed.
The top surface of this Compartment Inner is closer to the shelf ‘rails’ so we know which side is up:
Apply some super glue along this left edge of the Compartment Inner:
Firmly press the two holes in the metal hinge panel of the Left-Hand Door assembly over these pins and allow the glue to set.
Make sure the door is correctly installed and facing the right way, as shown:
In the same way, apply some super glue along this right edge of the Compartment Inner and firmly press the two holes in the metal hinge panel of the Right-Hand Door assembly over these pins and allow the glue to set.
Again, make sure the door is correctly installed and facing the right way, as shown. I took this picture after the door was installed – the glue goes underneath the metal hinge, of course:
Thoughts
I am a bit surprised we are having to use so much super glue to assemble this partwork. I suppose I became so used to the larger 1:8 scale models that gluing things together feels so awkward and permanent. Still, I am really enjoying this build because of the quality of the external parts and attention to details like the chrome compartment handles!
